The resolve of the English people during the London Blitz cannot be overstated.

Original caption: “Wedding Ceremony at Church Hit by Bomb.” The bombing of this beautiful Roman Catholic Church in London did not stop Fusilier Tom Dowling and Miss Martha Coogan being married there today. After the ceremony was over, Father Finn, who performed the ceremony, assisted the bridal couple over the debris to the church exit. Fox. September 14, 1940.

It is very likely that Dowling was Irish, though, a member of the Dublin Fusiliers. But that’s just a guess based on the fact that the ceremony took place in a Catholic church.

They were also really good at adventuring.

Coolest part about the chapel I was married in is that it is a WWII memorial chapel, embedded in the walls all throughout the chapel (even up in the balcony and on the stairs) are pieces of Cathedrals and Churches from all over Europe that were bombed in WWII with little plaques under each one to tell you where it’s from.

It’s the Michigan State University Alumni Chapel which is on campus right up against the river. It also has a giant plaque at the entry way listing MSU Alumni that were in WWII.

I can’t seem to find any good pictures of the pieces of cathedrals at the moment, I’ll dig around though if you’re interested.

That’s cool. As a history buff, I’m fascinated by old churches, as they were the focal point for Medieval cities. On our trip to German and France a few years ago, we went to the cathedral at Reims in France, where all the kings of France had been crowned. We stood on the spot where Joan of Arc stood. It was humbling.

Yeah it’s all I would do if I was on a trip to Europe, all cathedrals.

I was thrilled to get married on campus, I went nuts when I found out the detail inside the chapel.

I was fortunate to of briefly assisted in an archaeological dig when I was younger in the cathedral half a mile away from my house.

When you go in, if you go round to the left you will find the Regimental Chapel.

Although the Regimental Chapel in the nave of the Cathedral was only formally established in 1949, that area of the west end of the Cathedral has long had an increasing assembly of war memorial and personal military memorials, dating back to 1856; and regimental colours dating back to 1745. They reflect the transition of the local regiment from the 34th Regiment of Foot to the Border Regiment, the King’s Own Regiment; and the present Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment. Memorial books of the First and Second World Wars onwards are displayed, from which names are formally read out each Friday.”

When I was young I never paid much attention to the history around me, but as I get older I’ve found a new appreciation for it.

nice!

I grew up in the center of the American Revolution down the street from George Washington’s Headquarters in Morristown, NJ so I’m a bit of a history guy.

It’s weird living in Michigan and not having such old history, i mean it’s own here, just no where near as much.

I drive past Washington’s Headquarters every day going home from work (I live just north of Morristown closer to Morris Plains). Come spring my wife and I will be visiting it and exploring the Patriot’s Path. NJ has a lot of history (my hometown of Woodbridge was founded in 1669), but compared to Europe its still so new. When Washington was marching through NJ, some of the churches I visited when I went to Germany a few years back were already 1000 years old.

Cool.

My city is one of only two in the U.K. that goes back 2,000 years (the castle in about 925 years old). So there is history everywhere. Where Bonnie Prince Charlie stayed on his was back to Scotland is now a Marks and Spencer cloth store.

Aaaaaaand another Motown OPPO is discovered.

I left after high school, went to Michigan State and never moved back to NJ full time.

Yeah it’s pretty crazy about the history differences. Being an American History Buff means I don’t have to remember so many years hahahaha

I think my favorite story (regardless whether apocryphal or not):

Sign in front of the news shop whose storefront had been mostly demolished: More Open Than Usual .

True. But it all interlinks. President Woodrow Wilson’s parents were from my home city and their home (built by Woodrow’s grand father) went up for sale a couple of years back.

I’m going to go out on a limb and guess that you’re correct that a wedding between two people with common Irish surnames, officiated by a third, involved Irish persons.

You made the right choice. Having all four seasons is nice, but everything else is a pain. Morristown is real nice for NJ, though.

no one thinks of new jersey as mountainous but in comparison to here in Michigan - it may as well be the Himalayas.
